The retreat will be led by Rev Heather Simpson and held at Raincliff Anglican Youth Camp (note the change of location) in South-Canterbury and will run from the 14th – 16th February. (From 7pm Sunday evening to approximately 11am on Tuesday morning.) The cost for the weekend is $75 which includes food and accommodation.

Heather is trained in spiritual direction by Spiritual Growth Ministries and has been leading spiritual direction for the past 3 years. There will be some opportunities for those attending to have a 30-45 minute one on one spiritual direction session with her.

I will light candles

Candles of joy, despite all sadness,
Candles of hope where despair keeps watch.
Candles of courage for fears ever present,
Candles of peace for tempest-tossed days,
Candles of grace to ease heavy burdens,
Candles of love to inspire all my living,
Candles that will burn all the year long.

Crafty Crafters has finished for the year. It will resume on Thursday 21st January 2021.

A good news story from Joan Macdonald:

My grandson Mark Cox was awarded Dux of Ferndale School this week. This is the base school for many special needs children. Mark has been out at New Brighton for about three, maybe four years, mainly learning life skills. It is not an academic award but we were even prouder when it’s specifically noted by the Principal it’s for his positive attitude and kindness. Mark is 21. I am not sure what is planned for next year but hopeful that he will employed in some way. As a little toddler he came with me to church a number of times. He always made a beeline for David Carmichael’s knobs and buttons of his tape recorder when he used it up near the communion table, or stood on the steps dangling keys and jabbering away in his own lingo. Mark has also earned the Duke of Edinburgh gold medal. He is a lovely young man and we are very proud of his achievements.

Congratulations to Mark from everyone at St Martins – well done!

Some brief points from the Board of Manager’s meeting on Wednesday evening:

  • There will be a fire evacuation drill at a service sometime in January. Are you aware of the quickest way out of the building from where you are right now??
  • The lights in the lounge are to be replaced with brighter ones. This will lift the light level in the lounge to the same level as that in the church.
  • Joan Macdonald reported on the parish finances.
  • If you hear of anyone or any group looking for a meeting space please mention to them that we have spaces for hire.
  • If you have an accident or fall of any sort within the church buildings or precincts please don’t forget to register it with Anna in the church office. This is a health and safety requirement and alerts us to any safety issues that might need to be fixed up. Incident Report forms are in the kitchen with the first aid kit.
  • The Board agreed to ask the congregation to support a request to the Alpine Presbytery to allow us to set up a Parish Council in the place of the existing Session and Board of Managers.
