WELCOME AND NOTICES
CALL TO WORSHIP:
The Spirit of God is calling in wind and whimsy.
The Spirit of Christ is calling in challenge and by example.
The Spirit calls, insistently and persistently, urging change
and transformation.
Despite any feelings of uncertainty even fear, we come to worship in hope and trust. We come, seeking, wondering,
hoping God will gift us with new life.
HYMN: Come in, Come in New Year Tune: Darwall WOV 147(ii)
Come in, come in New Year
with shining summer day!
Your promise calls us here
to celebrate and pray,
through Janu-ary’s open door
to stride with hopeful step once more.
Come in, New Year, and sell
your wares of chance and change:
engage us with your spell
to risk and re-arrange,
to feel the Spirit’s impulse beat,
to follow down a different street.
The calendar of Christ
will mark the seasons’ turn,
his story claim our trust,
his love be ours to learn.
For all the world, for young and old, we pray a year of peace unfold. ? Shirley Murray (CoC)
OPENING PRAYERS
STORYTIME
SONG: One More Step along the World I Go
One more step along the world I go,
one more step along the world I go;
from the old things to the new
keep me travelling along with you:
And it’s from the old I travel to the new;
keep me traveling along with you.
Round the corner of the world I turn,
more and more about the world I learn;
all the new things that I see
you’ll be looking at along with me:
As I travel through the bad and good,
keep me travelling the way I should;
where I see no way to go
you’ll be telling me the way, I know:
Give me courage when the world is rough,
keep me loving though the world is tough;
leap and sing in all I do,
keep me travelling along with you: © Hope Publishing (VU)
INTRODUCTION TO THE READINGS
READINGS: Isaiah 42: 1-9 Jenny Brettell
Matthew 3: 13-17 Bernie Brettell
CAROL: Joy to the World
Joy to the world! The Lord is come;
let earth receive its king;
let every heart prepare him room,
and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.
Joy to the earth! The Saviour reigns;
let us our songs employ;
while fields and streams, rocks, hills and plains
repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy,
repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
He rules the world with truth and grace,
and makes the nations prove
the glories of his righteousness
and wonders of his love, and wonders of his love,
and wonders, wonders of his love. C/A

HYMN: Will You Come and Follow Me
Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don’t know and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known,
will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?
Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me?
Will you love the “you” you hide if I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same?
Will you use the faith you’ve found to reshape the world around,
through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me?
Christ, your summons echoes true when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you and never be the same?
In your company I’ll go where your love and footsteps show.
this I’ll move and live and grow in you and you in me.

THE OFFERING
O God, we look at our feet and see the unfolding possibilities.
May we move in the direction of service.
We look at our hands and see a future of compassion.
May we seek to do the work of justice.
We look into our hearts and see love and the connection.
In this new year may we be shaped as a beloved
and loving community, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
WE GREET ONE ANOTHER
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER
HYMN: I The Lord of Sea and Sky
I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin
my hand will save.
I who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?
Here I am, Lord; is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night;
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.
I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people’s pain;
I have wept for love of them.
They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word of them.
Whom shall I send?
I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will tend the poor and lame;
I will set a feast for them.
My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide
till their hearts are satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
Whom shall I send? © OCP Publications (CH4)
